About Scalp Micropigmentation

Some men lose their hair at an early age, usually because of genetics. However, it turns out that most men will experience hair loss by mid to late life. Because of this, it’s no wonder why the hair loss solution industry is so massive.  At long last, there is finally a hair loss protocol that delivers what it promises.  No false claims or costly disappointments. No surgery, no daily maintenance.

Scalp Micropigmentation, known as SMP, is the practice of tattooing micro follicles into the scalp skin to give the illusion of a shaved head, or hair density. SMP can be done over an entire scalp, or in localized areas.  At Hairvision we are extensively experienced working with clients with varying degrees of hair loss, including women and individuals with alopecia.

If we are working on a full head, we design a hairline that best pronounces the client’s features. If the treatment is a partial area of the scalp, we blend the work in so seamlessly someone standing right next to you won’t even notice. The realism is amazing. Work is meticulous, gentle and downtime is minimal.

Frequently asked questions

Scalp micropigmentation, also known as hair tattoo, is a cosmetic treatment for thinning hair or hair loss. It’s sometimes also called a hair tattoo. We use thin, small needles to deposit tiny dots of pigment (colour) on the scalp. These dots give the appearance of thicker hair. Scalp micropigmentation pigments are cosmetic-grade, permanent inks.

When a skilled technician performs scalp micropigmentation, it can hide thinning areas on your scalp. It may also hide birthmarks or scars. The treatment can also give the illusion of having shaved hair or a “buzz cut” on people who are bald. Scalp micropigmentation is noninvasive and doesn’t require surgery or anaesthesia.

Scalp micropigmentation is a type of micropigmentation (permanent makeup). The treatment can create the appearance of thicker hair in people who have:

  • Alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition that causes hair loss.
  • Chemotherapy-related hair loss.
  • Hair loss in women.
  • Hormonal conditions that cause hair loss, including polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
  • Male pattern baldness, receding hairline or baldness at the crown of the head.
  • Thin hair or scalp show-through.
  • Scars or birthmarks on the scalp.

Scalp micropigmentation doesn’t grow hair or change your natural hair growth. It’s not a hair loss treatment. It also won’t cause hair loss or damage your existing hair follicles. Scalp micropigmentation is a way to make it look like you have fuller, thicker hair.

If correctly performed by an expert, it has a realistic, undetectable, and natural outcome. Furthermore, the pigment is blended into existing hair follicles in the treatment procedure. Thus, creating a seamless look across the entire scalp.

Also, the hair color is matched by evaluating where the client fits on the color scale. You can match the shade of pigment to suit various skin tones, including Caucasians and blacks. It also works with gray hair because when cut low, the hair roots are darker. A grayscale pigment can be used to adjust the ink shade, so it blends.

It’s not a one-time procedure. It requires 3-4 sessions of 2-5 hours each, depending on the severity of hair decline. The sessions are spaced ten to twenty days apart. After each session, minimal swelling and slight redness are experienced on the scalp for a day or two. Minimal recovery time is needed as most individuals return to work the same day or the next day. But, it takes about seven days for full scalp recovery.

During recovery, it’s advisable to wear a hat to prevent exposure to the sun as this means longer retention.

Your next question might be, “when can I wash my hair after scalp micropigmentation?” Well, you must avoid scrubbing, shaving, and shampooing for 4-5 days. You can wash it with warm soapy water.

After the final session, here are some tips for you to follow:

  • Avoid swimming, saunas, steam, heavy exercise, and excessive sweating for a week.
You can use a sterilized paper towel to blot away sweat.
  • Apply moisturizer to your scalp after a week. Avoid strong chemicals and hair growth products for a while so the pigment can settle properly.
  • You could get a haircut after five days

To create a seamless blend with existing hair follicles Scalp micropigmentation is perfect for bald individuals who choose to keep their remaining hair short.

For individuals who have more hair but are experiencing thinning it can be used to give the appearance of added fullness (this is known as density scalp micropigmentation as the ink is added between the hair).

Scalp micropigmentation can also be used around the hairline in individuals who are receding to add fullness. It can also be used to camouflage scars on the scalp or disguise hair transplant scarring.

The treatment is not painful as the depth the pigment is implanted is only in the dermis and not deep like a body art tattoo. The needle used during your treatment is tiny and goes just under the very surface of the scalp.

The majority of clients describe the whole process as relatively painless. Certain areas around the temples or hairline can be a little bit more sensitive in some people. Clients who have had regular body tattooing describe the sensation as much less painful and similar to a dull scratch or tweezing of the eyebrows. Pain killers can also be taken a few hours before if you are worried.

Looking after your treatment is super easy! How to care for your treatment in the short and long term will be thoroughly explained during your sessions.

Your treatment is permanent although after 2-4 years it will gradually lighten so most people at this stage have a refresh or ‘top-up’. This is one session where your whole treatment will be covered in a slightly darker shade of ink to make it look as fresh as when it was first done!

Pricing is determined by the hair loss treatment type plus the according to the area that is needing to be covered. Pricing starting from:
$400 plus for scar camouflage
$1000 to $3000 for density, full hairline creation.
